namoʼstu te vyāsa viśālabuddhe phullāravindāyatapatranetra,
yena tvayā bhāratatailapūrṇaḥ prajvālito jñānamayapradīpaḥ.
Salutations unto Lord Vyāsa of vast intellect, whose eyes are large like the petals of a blossomed lotus. By whom, filled with the oil of Mahābhārata, the lamp of knowledge was well lit.
— Gītā DhyānamThis tool is dedicated to sage Vyāsa. It is said that when composing the Bhagavad Gītā, Vyāsa required a scribe to not only accurately write down all 700 verses as he chanted them without break, but also fully understand them in all their meaning. By using one of his tusks to etch the verses on to palm leaves as Vyāsa reeled off verse after verse, Lord Gaṅeśa is said to have played this role.
